Why did you choose JBL EON 615 2-way powered loudspeakers for your mains?
- Cost – this model is about a decade old and discontinued. If well-treated, they still sound great and can have a lot of life in them. Mine were purchased used from a touring drummer. He said he loved them for his local band gigs, and they have been fantastic so far.
- Location – they were nearby, so I could get them in time for rehearsal before our second gig.
- Condition – I tested the speakers using an Alto Bluetooth-to-XLR module and battery pack in the parking lot. They were in excellent condition, included JBL covers, and sounded amazing.
With unlimited resources (money, time, etc.), would I choose these loudspeakers again? Probably not. It has nothing to do with the sound they produce – I am very happy with them. More importantly, our band gets frequent compliments from the audience about our sound. The reasons I might choose otherwise are:
- Warranty – new speakers are typically covered by a manufacturer’s warranty
- Technology – increased efficiency, frequency response and range
- Materials – stronger material with lighter weight and greater resistance to damage
Could our sound be better? Sure, but sound quality is so incredibly subjective. I will do a lot of comparison shopping and, more importantly, listening before my next purchase.
